Research & Development activity at Gen Re Life Health involves developing new products and analysing trends. To bring the latest expertise to our clients worldwide this means keeping up to date with international developments. Occasionally this leads to more than discussions with colleagues in other locations. For me it meant spending some working time in our Cape Town office. The South African life insurance market has gained a justified reputation as a consistent source of product innovation over many years. My aim was to find out why South Africa’s life insurers have so often been at the leading edge.
